The term ‘parallelogram’ was derived from the Greek word ‘parallelogrammon’ which stands for “bounded by parallel lines”. Hence, a parallelogram is a quadrilateral that is bounded by parallel lines. It is a shape in which the opposite sides are parallel and equal.
1. Quadrilaterals
Quadrilaterals are four-sided polygons.
Polygons are closed, 2D shapes with only straight sides.
Rectangles, squares, rhombuses, and trapezoids are all quadrilaterals!
•Let's learn about a new type of quadrilateral: a parallelogram.
Parallelograms
Earlier you learned about parallel lines.
Parallel lines are lines that never cross or intersect each other.
Parallelograms are quadrilaterals with two sets of parallel sides.
Take a look!
2. •These are all parallelograms!
•Do you notice anything about the word parallelogram?
•It has the word parallel in it!
•Parallel means that two or more lines are side by side without ever touching each
•So, a parallelogram will have at least two sides that are parallel to each other.
3. You know some shapes that are parallelograms!
That’s right! Squares and rectangles are parallelograms.
