Comparing and Ordering Fractions in ascending or descending order. Using estimation to compare fractions. Comparing fractions with fraction strips.

1. Comparing & Ordering Fractions
3 Strategies
- Estimating
- Fraction Strips
- Making Equivalent Fractions (Using Common Denominators)
Using Estimation to Compare Fractions
We compare fractions by using:
greater than >
less than <
equal to =
estimate - an answer that is close to the exact answer and is
found by rounding
We can estimate fractions by rounding to 0, 1/2, or 1
Estimating can make it easier to compare fractions

2. Let's Practice Estimating Fractions
Which number is the fraction closest to? 0, 1/2, or 1?
Let's Try It!
Use estimation to compare the following fractions.
Round each fraction to 0, 1/2 , or 1
0 1 1
2
3 4 1 2
4 8 10 3
7 2 6 9
9 5 12 10
3 56 3 13 2 78 3 14

3. Comparing Fractions with Fraction Strips
You can use fraction strips to compare fractions with unlike

Let's Try It!
Use >, <, or = to compare the following fractions
Use the fraction strips to help you.
1 3
2 5
4 3
12 8
3 9
4 12

4. Use >, <, or = to compare the following fractions
Use the fraction strips to help you.
7 6
10 8
2 1
6 3
3 4
4 5
You can also compare fractions by finding common denominators
Remember: to find a common denominator find LCM
3 6 24 30 4 3
5 8 40 40 5 4
1 4 10 2
2 9 25 5
6 8
5 15
9 10
7 21

5. Ordering Fractions
By finding common denominators, you can make
equivalent fractions for the numbers you are trying to
put in order.
Put the following fractions in order from least to greatest.
3 2 5 1
4 5 8 2
1 2 3 1
3 7 14 6
11 5 3 9
12 6 4 10
