32. Rules for Using Quotation Marks Reference Guide A direct quotation begins with a capital letter. Pat said, “The movie starts at 6:30.” When a quoted sentence is divided into two parts by interrupting expressions (like he said, she replied, or Josiah added) the second part begins with a lowercase letter. This is called a split quotation. “T believe,” Kala said, “you can make it on time.” If it is a new sentence, it begins with a capital letter. “I’m sorry I can’t go, Mona apologized.“Thank you for inviting me.” A direct quotation is set off from the rest of the sentence with commas. “T think,” said Mr. Lee,” that we can arrange to watch it in the classroom.” Closing quotation marks are always place outside of commas and periods. “That lemon pie was good,” she said, “but the chocolate cheesecake was better.” Closing quotation marks are always placed inside colons and semicolons. Socrates once said, “As for me, all I know is that I know nothing”; I wonder why people think he was sucha wise man. Closing quotation marks are place outside question marks and exclamation points if the quotation is a question or an exclamation; otherwise, they are place inside. Latisha asked, “Whal, time ak. 33. Suggested Activity Another great activity to do with this PowerPoint is to have the kids write their own dialogues from photos. I cut some interesting pictures out of magazines of all kinds of different people interacting. I glued them on cardstock, with the words Who? What? Where? When? and Why? written on each card and laminated them. I passed the cards out, and students had to imagine what the people were saying to each other in the pictures, and then write the dialogue, using correct punctuation. They also had to later incorporate the dial&@f@into a short story
