event_available Orton-Gillingham Math Tutoring At Syllables Learning Center, we use the Orton-Gillingham multisensory cognitive approach to teaching math for grades K-5. Our hands-on techniques enable students to build their knowledge of abstract math functions. During one-on-one math tutoring, students use manipulatives to help them see, hear, and feel the way a problem needs to be solved. If the student struggles with number sense, we will start them with the most basic of concepts in order to provide a strong foundation. Our games and activities make math fun while building math fact accuracy and speed.

event_available Study Skills As students progress through their school years, they must acquire, memorize, process, and use a tremendous amount of information. Poor school performance can indicate that a student has not learned “how to learn.” Students with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, poor working memory, or other learning differences can have a particularly hard time mastering study skills. At Syllables Learning Center, we help students of all ages acquire and hone study skills — resulting in successful learning and better grades. The Components of Good Study Skills To study efficiently and effectively, students must possess three important skills: The ability to acquire knowledge from written materials, along with the ability to discern the relative importance of the content they read and hear. The ability to store and organize knowledge in memory and in the notes they take. The ability to express knowledge in writing and when taking tests.
event_available Cogmed Working Memory Training Working memory is the ability to keep information in your mind for a short time, focus on a task, and remember what to do next. It is a critical function for complex tasks such as decoding, reasoning, comprehension and learning. If your brain were a computer, your long-term memory would be your hard drive, and your working memory would be your RAM. Why is Working Memory important? It is crucial for success in daily life for tasks such as following multi-step instructions and staying focused. It is one of the best predictors of academic achievement. 80% of children who scored in the lowest 10% for working memory also experienced substantial problems in math, reading, or both. Working memory is commonly impaired in people with ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning disabilities, as well as in about fifteen percent of typical learners.
event_available Reading Tutoring Reading is a skill that will determine a student’s level of success in school and subsequently in life. For some students, reading is effortless. For others, it is one of life’s biggest struggles. At Syllables Learning Center, our reading tutoring works to make fluent readers out of all students, including struggling readers and students with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, poor working memory, and other learning differences. The Syllables Reading Curriculum Our Orton-Gillingham based reading tutoring guides students of all ages through the critical components of reading, including: Phonological and Phonemic Awareness Phonics Vocabulary Spelling Fluency Comprehension
event_available Writing Tutoring Writing is the most complex of academic tasks. It requires the working memory space to juggle multiple concepts at once and then apply them in a distinct sequence. If these skills are not automatic, the juggling act simply collapses.
