About

Leigh Katz has been a private tutor and classroom teacher for over 20 years specializing in Reading, Writing, Literature and Early Literacy. She holds a Masters Degree in English Education from Columbia University Teachers College where she received high honors and was inducted into the International Honor Society in Education. As a private English tutor in Fairfield County, CT, she has extensive experience working with students from Kindergarten through College and has adapted her teaching strategies to suit each child’s learning needs and style. She is a strong believer in the idea that a passion for teaching should be just as strong as a passion for the subject being taught.

Leigh is also a professionally trained actress with a strong performance and theatre education background. She believes that her work in the arts has strongly enhanced her teaching practice.

Early Childhood Literacy Progams & Reading DevelopmentK-3 I remember telling a group of friends that I read to my infant daughter every night while she laid beside me in her bassinet. Some were skeptical. “Why are you doing that?”, “She doesn’t know what’s going on?”. Good reading skills are vital to student success.

Reading Elementary school and beyond Well I know how to break up the syllables and sound out the words so isn't that enough? No! In order to develop strong reading skills, we must develop strong comprehension skills.

Writing Good writing skills are developed through strong reading skills. The two go hand in hand! I have discovered in all my years of teaching that many students are terrified of writing, do not know how to begin, and are often stuck staring at a blank page.

Literature Why do we have to read Shakespeare and all these boring novels? Practical folks may say “how will reading this stuff serve me later in life?” What people fail to recognize is that the study of literature increases our emotional intelligence, empathy, and our overall understanding of the human race.

English as a Second Language For Non-Native speakers, learning the English language can be a daunting challenge! Like most languages, there are standard rules to follow; however, with English, there are an equal amount of exceptions to those rules, making it difficult to grasp for new speakers.
