In December of 1986, David Parker borrowed $400 from his father and purchased a few chairs so he could start tutoring kids who were struggling at local schools. He then rented one room on South Main Street in Concord and soon the growing tutoring business moved to several rooms in an office building on Green Street. In the year 2000, just fourteen years after taking on his first client, Parker purchased the historic Lewis Downing, Jr. House at 33 Pleasant Street in order to expand the services he offered for students and families to include not just tutoring, but consulting and a small day school, Parker Academy.
Parker Academy operated during the daytime hours at the Downing House and then tutoring took over in the afternoons and evenings. The Downing House was full of hard working, dedicated students, teachers and tutors from dawn to well after dusk. By 2004, the day school needed additional space and Parker purchased the historic Millville School building located at the corner of Fisk Road and Hopkinton Road, across from the entrance to St. Paul’s School. Having returned to his own educational roots — Parker attended the Millville School for elementary school — David Parker solidified his commitment to providing high quality educational options that capitalize on individual strengths and bring the success each student deserves.
Parker’s story is a great example of the American Dream in an era where many American’s felt the American Dream was out of reach, proving and teaching his students that they could achieve anything they set their minds to. Hard work, dedication and ingenuity were important factors in the history of Concord and David Parker represents a hometown boy that built a successful corporation by helping it’s citizens find their strengths and succeed in school.
