Why did my children start Kumon? Back in 1998 my eldest daughter was 10, in the top maths set at a good school when I noticed her counting on her fingers when doing her homework! My second daughter, then aged 6 had not had a problem learning to read – without the help of phonics as was then the practice in state schools – but her spelling was suffering. My son aged 3, like a lot of boys, had little interest in sitting still let alone holding a pencil – he would be young for his year at school and as a teacher, I knew he would struggle to show his ability. Over the years I have been a Kumon instructor, I have come to realise there are as many reasons for doing Kumon as there are children. It is a programme which helps the able as well as the less able. The reason it is so successful is because it caters for the individual and this is what makes being an instructor such a rewarding experience. I work with children I get to know very well over the years, and am instrumental in helping them both overcome any weaknesses and develop their strengths. By giving them work at exactly the right level and allowing them the right amount of practice and challenge, by working with their parents so that they know how to help their children develop into independent learners, I see the children go from strength to strength and achieve their goals.
